MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A plan to revitalize the Memphis Fair Grounds should be done by fall.

The Memphis Sports and Event Center comes with anything and everything, especially youth and families.

“It’s going to have a huge impact on the community just being adjacent, right in the heart of Orange Mound,” said Andre Nowell with Turner Construction.

It’s not much right now, but by this October, this construction site will look a little different.

It’s an investment the city says they can be proud of.

“This is really going to put us on the map for the nation,” said Mary Claire Borys with the City of Memphis.

The Memphis Sports and Events Center aims to serve as a 365-day-a-year tourism destination.

A few of the amenities in the 227,000 square-foot complex include a bowling alley and multiple restaurants.

$56 million is being invested in what is soon to be the Memphis Sports and Events Center with accompanying infrastructure, but it doesn’t stop just there.

Borys said it can be utilized to help the youth in the community as well, with activities and events like “basketball, volleyball, pickleball, wrestling, indoor track, tradeshows, graduation.”

Nowell said youth will benefit the most from this.

“I think it’s going to be incredible for young people in the area,” said Nowell, “And, who knows man, this could be the next training center for the next LeBron James.”

Other features of the project:

-16 BASKETBALL COURTS

-32 VOLLEYBALL COURTS

-THREE OUTDOOR FIELDS AND A PLAYGROUND

The center is ahead of schedule and ready to open come October.
